Here’s a riddle I don’t expect you to answer, but you’re welcome to try: When is Meryl Streep like your top salesperson, or best manager, or most valuable employee? The answer is all the time. No matter what’s happening in your company, in your community or in your country, the ongoing best practice is to treat your top talent like they truly matter to your organization. That’s an easy act to put on: They do truly matter.
For those of you who care, the film industry this week honors its best and brightest at the annual Academy Awards ceremony this Sunday night (Feb. 26). So you better get the popcorn popped and be prepared for a solid hour’s worth of entertainment … sadly lasting more than three hours.
Whether or not you’re a film fan, there’s a lesson to be learned … and Dr. Paul Eccher has made it for us. You can click here to read a TrainingIndustry.com article from Paul, covering how to identify and retain your star performers, cleverly using the Oscars as a metaphor for talent management, talent recognition and talent retention.
Paul makes some very good points about developing superstars in your organization and about the value these A-listers can bring to any mission, project or goal. Check it out.
But meanwhile, the audience is hushed, the band is playing a soft fanfare, two celebrities are onstage looking embarrassed about the bad joke they just flubbed, the nominees have cameras pointed at them and are already practicing looking gracious, and the envelope is being ripped open. A flash of perfect porcelain teeth and the winner is…The company that recognizes leadership at all levels.
Are you ready for your close-up now, or are you left pretending to be happy for your competition’s success?
I’d love to hear what award-worthy efforts your organization is doing to retain and support your top talent.
