Improving the quality and safety of medical care in the U.S. will require improvements in medical education. This article lists five “must haves” for medical education curricula along with seven recommendations from the Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation’s report, “Unmet Needs: Teaching Physicians to Provide Safe Care.” The author reviews the barriers to implementing these recommendations and outlines three things that medical schools and training hospitals can do to incorporate quality and safety into medical education.
